Constructive Bloodbath in Indonesia by Nathaniel Mehr

RevSocialist اش... —Tue, 01/03/2012 - 21:05

This book (127pg) discusses a very important, but often ignored event in history: the wholesale slaughter of communists and working class sympathizers in Indonesia. The name of the book "Constructive Bloodbath in Indonesia" is the authors sarcastic way of pointing out this lack of interest in what can only be described as a horrible, inhuman massacre. Started by the military, with the support, backing, and encouragement of amerikkka and britain, the massacre was carried out by different elements of society, all with clear instructions from the top and under the general control of the military. The main perpetrators besides the military itself were nationalist youth groups and reactionary islamic groups, both of whose political philosophies to this day focus an inordinate amount of hatred towards communists.

On Biblical Business by Roque Dalton

On Biblical Business
by Roque Dalton

The Bible says
Christ multiplied bread
and fish for the people.

If that's so, he did well
and that makes him greater than a great general
who wins a thousand battles in which millions of poor people die.

But at present the North Americans,
to see that bread and fish don't multiply
and that everyone suffers in resignation
the multiplied hunger that's part of big business,
step up production of Bibles
in all the dialects we poor speak
and ship them to us in the hands of blond young men

Ode to Pacification by Mario Benedetti

Ode to Pacification
by Mario Benedetti

I don't know how far the peacemakers will take their
metallic roar of peace
but there are certain insurance brokers who sell
policies against peacemaking
and there are those who'll seek the death penalty for
those who don't want to be pacified

when the peacemakers aim, they fire, of course to make peace
and sometimes they even make peace for two birds with one stone

clearly, there's always some fool who refuses to
be pacified behind his back
or some idiot who resists a gradual peace

The Forest by William J Pomeroy

RevSocialist اش... —Wed, 08/11/2010 - 13:49

This book (220pg) by amerikan communist William Pomeroy is about the post-WWII armed struggle of the Filipino resistance group Hukbalahap (aka Huk) against the puppet Filipino governments that were simply the local running dogs of amerikkkan imperialism, and many of who were actually colonial officials during the period of amerikkkan colonial occupation and also during the fascist japanese occupation. The Hukbalahap was originally created on 29 March 1942, shortly after the japanese occupation of the phillipines and the start of mass repression that the japanese carried out routinely in it's occupied territories. It was created as an armed resistance organization to the japanese fascists, and was composed of communists, socialists, and trade unionists, and occupation wise made up mainly of peasants, with a smaller percentage of workers.

To be a Feminist is by Micere Githae Mugo

RevSocialist اش... —Sat, 08/07/2010 - 07:27

The following is a somewhat long (5pg) poem (or "song" as she calls it) about feminism by Kenyan marxist and feminist Micere Githae Mugo. It is a beautiful poem and describes the feminism of the oppressed, i.e. real feminism, perfectly. Enjoy comrades:

The Trial of Joan of Arc by Bertolt Brecht

RevSocialist اش... —Tue, 04/13/2010 - 08:03

This short play (41pg) by Brecht is a beautiful play about one of the most well known resistance figures of Europe, Joan of Arc. She is often portrayed as insane, which is not surprising since any one who fought against british [brutish] imperialism was subject to demonization and dehumanization. In reality, Joan of Arc was an intelligent, brave, strong peasant girl, who began fighting against british imperialism and occupation when she was only sixteen. In the play you can see her intellect, and the court dialogue is kept very close or the same as what she said. Of course Brecht does add his own interpretation in, especially in the street scenes and the end where Joan refuses to sell out and betray her people. Of course this may be a little fictionalizing on Brecht's part, but I don't think that it is far from the truth in any case.

Exile by Otto Rene Castillo

Exile
By Otto Rene Castillo

I

My exile was made of cries.

The infinite face of police, grey
on my insufficient features.
The great tables of hunger beyond the fist
full of dollars that violates the land.
The bags packed every month,
ready to wrap up the exodus
of tears and dust.

I walked strange shores
in search of my country's face.
Dawns of gulls followed me.
I received the brutal embraces
of he who discovers a cataclysm of roses
in the most hidden places of his soul;
touch of hands in the nights
of escape, where the liquid eyes

Gandhi and the MYTH of non-violence

RevSocialist اش... —Tue, 02/23/2010 - 15:10

I was never a big supporter of Gandhi, or non-violence, but I did respect Gandhi for his resistance to British colonial rule. But after reading this pamphlet I have lost all respect in Gandhi and now actively dislike him for more than his stupid policy of non-violence. Even when I was a child I always liked the idea of the Sepoy Mutiny and Boxer Rebellion which were very violent. This pamphlet, which was put out by the Socialist Alternative (australia), argues very well against Gandhi’s actions, policies, and reactionary views. The best parts of this pamphet is when the author quotes from Gandhi’s own words: he was so reactionary and pandering to the British that you really only need to read his own words to develop a violent dislike for this Abbas of India. Please read it is a very important pamphlet! Enjoy comrades:

Oppressed and Oppressors by Antonio Gramsci

RevSocialist اش... —Wed, 02/10/2010 - 09:11

I have been reading lately some of Gramsci’s pre-prison writings, and I must say that they are very interesting. I especially liked this essay (written by Antonio Gramsci at the age of 19/20 (i.e. in 1911) at his secondary school in Cagliari, Sardinia), and hope my children write secondary school essays as good as this! Anyway, please read comrades, it is a good introduction to Gramsci if you have not read him before, and if you have it is still very interesting to read:
