The Mother by Maxim Gorky

This is probably the most widely read piece that i have posted on this site, and it is also the most explicitly socialist. The author, Maksim Gorky, was a bolshevik activist and writer in czarist russia and this novel is written specifically about the socialist movement in czarist russia, but it explores what produces socialists, ie the socio-economic and political oppression and injustice inherent in any capitalist society. It is also encouraging to see how people stuggled and fought for socialism back then as we are now and I must say, this is a very encouraging and inspiring book. It's description of working class mobilization and resistance under the socialist banner and the descriptions of the real reasons which motivate socialists to fight and struggle is invaluable. But a word of caution: if you start reading this book you won't be able to stop until you're finished.
Can't Pay? Won't Pay! - Dario Fo

This is my favorite play of Dario Fo's (that I have read anyway). As with all of Fo's plays it is very comical, yet the theme of the play is only reinforced by this not cheapened. Since Fo's is a socialist most of his plays have elements of socialist ideology in them, but Can't Pay, Won't Pay, in my opinion carries a much more explicitly socialist message than most of Fo's plays.
