Nasty Foxfur by Giovanni Verga

This short story was written by Italian realist writer Giovanni Verga. In my opinion this story is an excellent portrayal of how capitalism turns workers into beasts of burden, ie brutalizes them and turns them against each other. The main character of this story "Foxfur" is continually described and alluded to as animal-like, which is the logical result of his constant exploitation and the back-breaking manual labor he has been forced to perform since his early youth. And this story also shows very clearly how capitalist oppression turns members of the revolutionary class against each other, brutalizes them, and promotes violent tensions between them. Also, we see that "Foxfur" is not only physically brutalized but also emotionally brutalized by his fellow workers and by his own family. In fact he is given little, if any, compassion at all, compassion which we human beings (and we are all humans no matter how much the brutal capitalist scum try to turn us into animals) need to live, just as much as food or water. "Foxfur" is not solely a literary character, there are thousands, if not millions, of workers like him in the world, brutalized by both the brutal capitalists, and also by their own class, thus they are raped two times over by the brutal capitalists and their disgusting economic system. This post is dedicated to all those "Foxfurs," your day of revenge is coming brothers and sisters...
