This book, Negroes with Guns, documents how the black community in Monroe, North Carolina, under the leadership of Robert Williams, decided to take up the policy of violent self-defense. His account of the success of this policy goes to show you how wrong the "so-called negro leaders" (Malcolm X's phrase) were. Williams even documents an occasion were some of the non-violent "freedom riders" came to Monroe, and details how the level of white violence reached it's pinnacle against these non-violent activists, whereas the racist whites never had the guts to attack the black community of Monroe like that because they had armed themselves and weren't afraid to defend themselves. I read this book about two months ago, and I must say it is a very powerfull and radical book, and I was very impressed with it. It is powerful because it shows what bullshit all that non-violence crap was on the part of MLK and others, and shows that violent resistance is the necessary aim of anyone who really intends to fight against racism (or for that matter imperialism). I mean not only did the black community in Monroe take up arms, but they succeeded time after time in their goals. I can't help but take a quote from Tupac to argue this further (from Young Black Male on 2pacalypse now):
Why is that?
Cause he tried to educate and liberate all blacks
Why is Martin Luther King in my book each week?
He told blacks, if they get smacked, turn the other cheek"
This is and was such a powerful book that it was the inspiration for the creation of the Black Panthers. Also, this book had to be written in exile because the white racist authority in amerikkka would never allow a black man to preach violent self-defense and live. I mean the whites were scared shitless of him, even the governor, and thus they eventually cooked up a false charge and he had to flee to exile in Cuba. Enjoy comrades!
